About Us

Prof. Gary Black BSc PhD (CNAA)

Technical Director

Qualifications:
BSc (Hons) in Applied Biology (1988)
PhD in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry (1992)

Research and Development Interests:

expression of recombinant enzymes in Escherichia coli and their biochemical and structural characterisation

proteome analysis of Streptococcus and Bacteroides

analysis of recombinant protein heterogeneity

Specifically I am interested in polysaccharide lyases, such as hyaluronate lyases and pectate lyases; glycoside hydrolases; glycosyl transferases; nitrile hydratases, nitrilases and amidases; ribulose monophosphate pathway enzymes and cytochrome P450s. Proteomic analysis is focussed mainly on the human and horse pathogens Streptococcus pyogenes and Bacteroides fragilis, and Streptococcus equi, respectively. I am also interested in understanding the heterogeneity of recombinant proteins expressed in E. coli.

Dr Justin Perry BA MA PhD

Commercial Director

Qualifications:

BA. MA (Cantab) in Natural Sciences (1990), Part II in Chemistry
PhD (Trinity College, Dublin) (1995) in synthetic and analytical chemistry

Research and Development Interests

  • Biocatalysis
  • Marine Paint Technology: developing new technology in antifouling coatings.
  • Supramolecular Chemistry measurement and characterization of interactions between molecules by NMR, UV/VIS or IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, fluorimetry or isothermal microcalorimetry.
  • Analysis of Paints and Pigments: analytical methods to determine the source of coloration in artists media for art conservation purposes. Of particular interest are yellow lake pigments from plant sources and 20th century artists’ media as used by Francis Bacon
